AMUWO ODOFIN: All Progressives Congress (APC) Stalwart in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency, Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS) has congratulated the newly elected Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives of the 10th Mational Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Hon Tajudeen Abbas respectively.

The APC House of Representatives Candidate in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency during the 2023 elections described the victory of the duo as a reflection of the desires of members of the National Assembly to choose their own leaders regardless of whatever influence from any quarters, …describing the process as a “progressive step in Nigeria’s democracy”.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, having been endorsed by the ruling APC was elected as the Senate President of the 10th Assembly.

The voting in the election of a new Senate President had commenced with Akpabio and former Governor of Zamfara State, Senator-elect Abdulazeez Yari, going toe to toe.

After a quick recess, Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk of the National Assembly, declared Akpabio as the Senate President having garnered 63 votes leaving his rival with 46 votes.

Sanusi in his congratulatory message advise Akpabio to understand that he is holding the office in trust for Nigerians and be conscious of this sacred trust, he should dedicate himself to the service of the Red Chamber and of the good citizens of this great country and with the commitment that he shall at all times strive to defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Push News 24 International reports.

Commit yourself to always observe the tenets of justice, equity and fairness in all dealings with your colleagues, and always apply the ideals of transparency, probity and accountability in the management of the affairs of the Senate“, PLS said.

The Lagos State born Prince also added “Whatever political party each one of the Senators may belong, you must be conscious of the fact that Nigerians are truly desirous of good governance and are looking to us to be the agents that will through meaningful legislation combat security, poverty, corruption and other problems and contradictions that have held our country back and stunted our development.”

To show that he knows the nature of the herculean task ahead of him, Sanusi advise him to set in-place the machinery of how to go about his reforms. “I believe very soon, Nigerians will have the privilege of seeing that unveiled to them” he said.

In the same vein PLS sent a congratulatory message to Hon Tajudeen Abbas, the preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, who emerged as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Abbas, who polled 353 votes, emerged as Speaker after a roll call of members-elect, 359 out of 360 members that participated in the process of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

A significant majority of the members-elect “openly declared” their votes for Abbas.

There were three contestants in the race, with the winner expected to defeat the others by a simple majority.

In his message PLS said “To say that Abass became a household name amongst his peers at the National Assembly long before his present status in the House is to state the obvious.” “Despite all that he has achieved as a fine legislator, he never let it get into his head, which is what his good upbringing is all about”.

Unassuming, chivalrous, accommodating, sincere, humble, courteous, adaptable, adventurous, affectionate, amiable, intuitive, dependable, easy-going, compassionate, courageous, considerate, diligent, frank, charming, generous, gregarious, impartial, inventive, reliable, resourceful, sympathetic, name it, Abass fits the bill for a perfect gentleman.”

Though not a perfect human, he could be misunderstood by some, which is normal with human beings. But those that relate with him closely know that he represents all the adjectives above. And I am pretty sure that those that misunderstood him would now have the opportunity of knowing him better as he pilots the affairs of the House in the next four years”. Sanusi said.

Abbas, after crossing the winning margin in the election, defeated his opponents: outgoing Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase, and Sani Jaji, who polled three votes, respectively.
