BREAKING : GRACE TO GRASS – R. KELLY TO FACE LIFE IMPRISONMENT, COURT FOUNDS HIM GUILTY OF SEX TRAFFICKING

Push News International : September 27th, 2021

R.Kelly

R. Kelly’s stunning fall from grace came to its bitter end Monday as jurors found the notorious “Pied Piper of R&B” guilty at his Brooklyn Federal Court sex trafficking trial.

The jury did not even deliberate for a full day before reaching its verdict finding him guilty of racketeering. Kelly faces a maximum of life in prison at sentencing if found guilty of all charges.

Jurors listened to the testimony of 11 accusers and more than 40 witnesses.

One after another, Kelly’s accusers and employees described a strange, alternate universe that existed behind the looming gates of R. Kelly’s mansion in the Chicago suburbs, where “Rob’s Rules” were the laws of the land.

Born Robert Sylvester Kelly, 54, the “King of R&B” rose to superstardom in the 1990s as his racy albums topped the charts. But accusations of sexual misconduct dogged the “Sex Me” singer he toured the country.

His 1994 secret and illegal marriage to R&B teen phenom Aaliyah — she was 15 and he was 27 — unnerved some of Kelly’s staunchest allies.

Demetrius Smith — Kelly’s former tour manager who bribed an official for a fake ID that showed Aaliyah was 18 and legally able to marry the older singer — told The News that despite his role, he did not approve of the unlawful union.

“She gave me a look like I let her down,” recalled former Kelly tour manager Demetrius Smith in an interview.

Kelly’s disgrace was sealed when a 2019 documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly” featured numerous women describing their abusive relationships with the singer over decades. He was charged with sex crimes in Brooklyn, Illinois and Minnesota later that year.

And in Brooklyn Federal Court over a 25-day span, women testified to the cruelty and violence that came with dating Kelly.

He beat girls and women with shoes, cords or his fists and delivered vicious spankings that left bruises when they broke his rules, the women testified.

Kelly referred to his spankings as “chastisements,” accusers recalled.
“The defendant saw chastising as teaching,” said one victim, Jane, who dated Kelly from 2015 to 2019, starting when she was just 17. “It was to help me… remember the way to act and be.”

Chastisements could occur if Kelly’s girls looked at other men, lied to him or were caught texting people he did not approve of, they testified. Kelly forced the women and girls to call him “Daddy,” made them wear baggy clothes when out in public, and sometimes forced them to remain in rooms for days at a time until he granted them permission to leave, the women claimed.

But despite the mountains of testimony against him, Kelly’s lawyers had tried to argue their client was the real victim, targeted because of his celebrity status by girls and women who sought to leach off of him.

“They’re all working on those paydays,” Cannick said, referencing lawsuits women have filed against Kelly. “These folks are capitalizing… You can’t blame folks for trying to make a living but that’s totally separate from trying to take away someone’s liberty.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nadia Shihata countered that the evidence in the case weighs against Kelly, and that it would take a conspiracy of dozens of lying witnesses for the singer to be innocent.

“He was just the unluckiest guy in the world,” she said sarcastically. “He doesn’t have just one person lie about him, he has upwards of 40, apparently.”

“He’s not unlucky, ladies and gentlemen, he’s guilty,” she said.

FESTAC MECHANIC VILLAGE ALLOCATION : I AM OVERWHELMED WITH JOY – FMR. AMUWO COUNCIL BOSS

Push News InternationalSeptember 24th, 2021.

immediate past Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Comrade Ayo Adewale has expressed his joy and appreciation to the government at all levels for listening to the yearnings of the people of Amuwo Odofin community over the need to revert to the master plan of FESTAC.

Ayo who is a Patron of NATA made his feelings known to the media commemorating the formal handover of FESTAC mechanic village to NATA as part of governments efforts to improve the infrastructural development of FESTAC.

Below is the report from NAN detailing activities of the formal handover.

. Gbenga Ashafa, Managing Director, Federal Housing Authority (FHA), on Thursday handed over the site of the six acres Mechanic Village/Market in FESTAC Town to the artisans.

Speaking during the handing-over ceremony at the new site on 6th Avenue, FESTAC town, Ashafa said that the event was in line with his promise to restore the lost glory of FESTAC town.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ashafa was represented by Mr Akintola Olagbemiro, FHA South-West Zonal Manager, at the handing over the site to the Nigerian Automobile Technician Association (NATA).

He expressed joy at the achievement of FHA’s age -long plan to resettle the mechanics in a comfortable permanent site.

“Let me quickly add that the place of mechanics, technicians, and artisans can never be underestimated in any society. Their overall importance in any economy is not of low profile because of the essential nature of their trade.

“The value chain they add to the economy is quite enormous, owing to the many jobs and employment they create through service deliveries.

“We in FHA will do all we can within our reach to make you comfortable, relevant and organised,” he said.

He urged the leadership of NATA, FESTAC branch, to ensure orderly business premises and collaboration with all tiers of government and other stakeholders for peaceful coexistence.

“With the success of today, it has been officially declared illegal for any auto mechanic to operate in any other part of FESTAC Town.

“We also implore the auto mechanic/technician leadership to help relevant authorities concerned with the security and sanitation of FESTAC Town, by compelling all your members to avail themselves of this facility,” he said.

Ashafa pledged continuous collaboration of FHA with the artisans and other stakeholders and thanked the FESTAC Town Residents Association, security agencies and other stakeholders for their patience.

He said that the FHA would liaise with the Amuwo Odofin Local Government and other stakeholders towards Right of Way (RoW) recovery.

Ashafa added that FHA surveyors had taken the measurements of the site for laying of the beacons on the new site.

The Chairman, Amuwo Odofin Local Government (AOLG), Mr Valentine Buraimoh, said the move would bring added development, not only to FESTAC Town, but to the entire community.

Buraimoh, however, noted that there was need to hold a stakeholders meeting to determine how the space allocated could be maximised.

“We need to get ideas and suggestions on how best we can use the space given to us,” he said.

NAN reports that NATA members, led by the immediate past chairman of the Amuwo Odofin Local Government (AOLG) Area, Mr Ayodele Adewale, marched in joy to the venue to take possession of the facility.

Master Plan of FESTAC Showing the provision for the mechanic village

Adewale told journalists that he was overwhelmed with joy that efforts of his tenure to ensure that the artisans and traders take possession of the site allocated to them in the original Master plan of FESTAC Town, had become a reality.

The Chairman of NATA, Mr Yunusa Elekolomo said: “I am happy that finally this site that rightly belongs to us is being given to us today.

“Since the 70s, we have suffered a lot of encroachment on this land, we have suffered too much, I will say that today that we are taking possession is my happiest day,” he said.

Earlier, President, FESTAC Town Residents Association (FTRA), Mr Shola Fakorede, said that enough sensitisation and awareness campaign was carried out for residents and artisans to embrace the project which had become a reality.

Benin Kingdom in Edo is Yoruba territory — Ooni of Ife

Push News International : September 23, 2021

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Tuesday said Benin Kingdom in Edo State remained part of the expansive Yoruba race, a pronouncement that may spark fresh rivalry and altercation between people of the two ancient kingdoms.

The monarch made the comment in reaction to a statement credited to the palace of the Oba of Benin challenging the claim by the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, that the Ooni of Ife remained the pre-eminent spiritual leader in Yorubaland and environs.

Oba Ogunwusi, via a statement by his Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, made available to PREMIUM TIMES, said he was not interested in any supremacy battle with anyone but that he would continue to put the records straight and avoid distortion of history from any quarters.

The monarch said going by historical evidence detailing the Oduduwa lineage, Benin Kingdom remained part and parcel of Oduduwa House.

“We in Oduduwa land have always seen and regarded our people in Benin kingdom as part and parcel of Oduduwa House. They are our brothers and sisters, coupled with historical facts to back up this position,” Ooni Ogunwusi said.

“The statement credited to the Alake of Egbaland, did not emanate from us but the reality is that as a highly experienced and well informed monarch, Kabiyesi Alake, who is a bonafide Oodua descendant is entitled to his opinion based on his knowledge and understanding of history,” the Ooni said.

“Let me emphasize for the umpteenth time that Kabiyesi Ooni is less concerned over any supremacy hullabaloo. He is only interest for now in how the sacred throne of Oduduwa can explore measures through which the collective interest and genuine unity among Yoruba and other tribes within the larger House of Oduduwa can be enhanced.

“This informed his resolve to build bridges of harmony among Yourba Obas. I am resolutely committed to how Yoruba ethnic group can restore its glory and pride of position among other ethnic inclinations in Nigeria and don’t want to be dragged into supremacy contest or join issues with anybody.”

The traditional ruler said he recalled that about six years ago, attempt was made by some people to upturn history during the launch of a book titled: I REMAIN SIR, YOUR OBEDIENT SERVANT, which he said stood historical facts on its head.

Oba Ogunwusi stated that If the position espoused by the Oba of Benin Palace in the media “is aimed at distancing our people in Benin from the South West and Yoruba, so be it.”

He however added, “We still identify with them as our kinsmen, regardless of the attempt to change the course of history.”

The Alake had, while hosting the Oba Ogunwusi in his palace on February 7, rated the Ooni as the number one monarch in Yorubaland and other territories considered part of the Oduduwa House.

In his rating, Oba Gbadebo said Oba Ogunwusi was number one of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland, followed by the Alaafin of Oyo, then by the Oba of Benin (in third position), the Alake of Egbaland (fourth) and the Awujale of Ijebuland (fifth).

But in a swift reaction on Tuesday, the Esogban of Benin and Odionwere of the Kingdom, David Edebiri, rejected the ranking, saying the Ooni of Ife was a son of the Oba of Benin and that the Oba of Benin stool has no relationship with the Yoruba race.

The Esogban said, “We wanted to discard this report as something that was not necessary at all. We do not see how the Alake of Egbaland suddenly woke up to think that the Oba of Benin is also a Yoruba Oba.

“There is no basis for such classification; Oba of Benin has nothing to do with the Yoruba Obas. It is simply unnecessary, unless they simply want to stir up an unnecessary controversy.

“We are not in Yorubaland. To be frank, it is because many of them are not willing to come up with the truth, the word Oba is alien to Yoruba monarchy; it is not part of their title from time immemorial.

“For instance, the one they call the Oba of Lagos, these are recent adaptations. In the 50s, there was no Oba of Lagos, what we had was the Eleko of Eko. That is the title of the King there. In Ibadan, you have the Olu Ibadan. You come to Abeokuta, you have the Alake of Egba land. You come to Oyo, you have the Alaafin of Oyo. In Ilesha, you have the Owa-Obokun of IIesha. So no Yoruba monarch had as part of his titles the word Oba except the Oba of Benin.

“That word Oba is indigenous to Benin. It is only in recent times you find everybody bearing Oba. When the Western Regional conference of traditional rulers took place in Benin City in 1942, go and check the attendance, there was no other monarch in the whole of the Western Region then that bore the title of Oba, except the Oba of Benin.

“So it is an unnecessary excursion, an unnecessary attempt to turn history upside down by the Alake by classifying the Oba of Benin as third in the hierarchy of kings.

“Our own traditional history says that the Ooni of Ife was a Benin Prince who wandered from here to Ife, settled there and became the ruler there. That is the position, if they don’t know, they should send people here; we will teach them.

“We will show them landmarks. So this is unnecessary misrepresentation of history. Maybe the Alake wanted to mention a different place and not Benin.

“The monarchical rulership in this part of the world started from Benin during the era of the Ogisos. It was the son of the last Ogiso, Owodo, that wandered from here to Ife and he became a ruler there, carrying everything about the Benin monarchical system to that place. There is no basis for such classification.

“The Ooni of Ife, by historical facts, is a son of the Oba of Benin, so they are not in the same class. The Oba of Benin is the only one that answers Oba, the rest don’t. But today, we hear Oba here and there, they are all recent adaptations. I am saying categorically that the word Oba is indigenous to Benin and not to Yoruba nation.”

FEDERAL GOVT. PARTNERS LAGOS ON FESTAC INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Push News International : September 12th, 2021 ; By -Florence Onuegbu

Sen. Gbenga Ashafa

Federal and Lagos State Government resolve to address degeneration of infrastructure in Festac Town – a federal housing estate situated in Amuwo-Odofin area of the state.

The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have resolved to address the degeneration of infrastructure in Festac Town – a federal housing estate situated in Amuwo-Odofin area of the state.

The resolution followed a meeting held on Wednesday between Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Sen Gbenga Ashafa, at Lagos House, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government took land administration and property development as critical.

He said that his administration’s urban renewal project was being implemented with the objective of opening up remote communities for healthy living and investment drive.

The governor described the development crisis in Festac Town as ”unpleasant”, saying that the population growth and influx of people led to the degeneration of the neighbourhood.

He also said that the failure of oversight on activities of property developers in Festac Town distorted the original master plan of the area.

”Festac Town as it is today is not what it looked like from 1970s to 1990s, given the degeneration of infrastructure and the unpleasant development observed in the community.

”The original master plan did not consider population growth, which reflected in the calibre of allottees that got the property then.

”As a result of lack of monitoring and enforcement, people took advantage of this weakness to build indiscriminately on every available space.

”I think we can still correct this irregularity and regenerate the entire area for healthy living and business, now that the Federal Housing Authority is headed by a highly knowledgeable indigene of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He said that once the federal government was ready, Lagos state would cooperate fully and work through its Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on agreed plan.

The governor said that the government was ready to give waiver on statutory issues that might aid the progress of the move.

According to him, Lagos is not the owner of the estate, but has a sense of duty to prevent the depreciation of the asset on that corridor.

Sanwo-Olu also said that the state government would collaborate with FHA in the area of technology transfer.

He said this would raise the capability of creating electronic solution that would further ease allocation of property, land administration and approval of survey plan.

The governor said that the state would be willing to work with the federal housing agency on estate property development in the Lagos East and West senatorial districts.

Sanwo-Olu praised President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister for Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, for the choice of Sen. Ashafa as the head of the federal housing agency.

He noted that Ashafa’s tenure as Executive Secretary on Land Matters in Lagos boosted the value of land and property in the state.

”We want you to succeed in this new assignment you have taken up, because we believe that you have vast knowledge in land administration matters.

”Development is critical to us in Lagos, and we will be willing to cooperate with you for more development.

“We are convinced that your tenure will bring about solution to challenges the nation faces in land administration,” he said.

Ashafa led top officials of FHA – a department in the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing – on a courtesy visit to the governor.

FHA’s Executive Director for Business Development, Mr Abdulmumin Jibrin, was among those on the team.

The FHA team presented four partnership requests to the Lagos government, which include  knowledge sharing and technology transfer, cooperation on infrastructure delivery and quick resolution of development crisis in Festac Town.

Ashafa, a former Senator representing Lagos East, said that FHA was ready to resolve all lingering crises delaying the re-modelling and regeneration of Festac Town.

He expressed confidence that the mid-way approach adopted by the agency would yield positive outcome for both governments and residents of the estate.

Ashafa described his meeting with the governor as ”productive and fruitful”, adding that the discussion be taken further.

”All the four issues we presented were taken in by the governor positively.

US UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENTS LAGOS COUNCIL BOSS BROTHER AS PROFESSOR

Push News International: September 19th, 2021

Professor Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey

Ikorodu born Nigerian, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey, has been appointed as a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities by the University of Maryland Global Campus, USA.

Shitta- Bey is the immediate younger brother of the Ikorodu West LCDA Boss, Hon Sulaiman Kazeem Olanrewaju popularly called SKO.

SKO, whose mother Alhaja Shakira Afolake Enifeni is a prominent politician and woman Leader of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ikorodu area of Lagos State before her relocation to the United States shares same maternal inclinations with the newly appointed US professor.

According to the Council boss in a chat with Push News International ” my mum did not hesitate to relocate her children for better education abroad and this paid off for them

The Chattered Accountant and Tax Consultant further showered praises on his mum and thank God for the heights her children have all achieved in her lifetime.

Until Shitta-Bey’s promotion, the university lecturer was an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities of the university.

In a chat with our correspondent, Shitta-Bey said his promotion will benefit Nigeria and humanity.

He said, “Nigerians and humanity in general stands to benefit from my hard work and experience owing to community service associated with my field of expertise. A good example is “The Shitta-Bey Undergraduate Prize” award launched early this year.

“I do feel differently but not because the promotion is coming from a foreign institution. I feel differently because I got what I worked hard for and it came at a record time just like my doctoral degree.”

On some of the challenges he faced, the Professor said, “No challenge really getting promoted. What many people will call challenges are NORMAL occurrences. As a goal getter, you don’t see challenges, you see opportunities to get better and do better to achieve more.”

Shitta-Bey, however, advised the Nigerian government to improve the education standard in the country.

He urged his colleagues leaving the country to be considerate, saying, “My honest advice is that they should follow their hearts but should not neglect to help the country in whatever capacity they can because Nigeria really needs the help of experts at this critical time.

“Anything and everything the government should do to improve standard and develop education in Nigeria is known to government, what is left is the goodwill to do the needful moving forward.

“Government and the country has financial, material, and human resources to develop education and other critical sectors of the country but lacks the goodwill to make it happen.”

Prior to becoming a Professor, Shitta-Bey was an adjunct in the Department of Philosophy, College of Arts and Sciences, Howard University and Prince George’s Community College, USA, Faculty and Researcher: Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University.

A 2004 Philosophy graduate of the Lagos State University, Ojo, Shitta-Bey later bagged a Masters Degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos and subsequently capped it with a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Ibadan in 2014.

In 2016, he was on a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Programme in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Uludag University, Bursa – Turkey.

Shitta-Bey has over 16 publications to his credit in reputable local and international journals and has attended well over 14 conferences in Nigeria, Ghana and USA.

He is a Member of American Philosophical Association, Nigerian Philosophical Association, International Social Ontology Society, Association for Political Theory, Society for German Idealism and Romanticism and Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa.
