Leaders of Indigeneous Traditional Institutions, Chiefs, the government and other stakeholders recently converged in townhall meeting at Inagbe Resort and Conference Center, Inagbe Island in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency on saturday 21st January, 2023, to deliberate and take a stand on the task of forestalling peace and unity across Amuwo Odofin communities.

The platform was the regular townhall meeting of the Council of Oba’s and Chiefs in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency which is led by HRM Oba Mobadenle Oyekan, The Onilado of Ilado and Inagbe Kingdom.

The convergence though was initiated years back to underscore the cultural dimension for Amuwo Odofin quest for sustainable peace and security, stakeholders held that the gathering has become more imperative in the present situation in view of the escalating cases of hostility and hatred among various tribes and religious groups during election year snd also the need to galvanize support for the candidacy of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of Nigeria come February 2023.

Tagged, ‘Culture, Peace and Community Security: The Role of Traditional Rulers during elections ’, the meeting recorded high turnout of all the traditional rulers and Chiefs from across Amuwo Odofin.

Some of those present at the event included HRM Mobalende Oyekan, Onilado of Ilado/Anagbe Island, HRM Oba Taofik A. Akeju, Awojo 3, Alahun of Imoore and Apapa, HRM Oba(Dr) Gausu AlaniRasaki, Ovori of Ibeshe Kingdom , HRM Oba Sheriff Adeshina Bello , Onigbanko of Igbanko Land, HRM Oba Yusuf Adio Mohammed, Onisiwo of Tomaro and Abagbo Land, HRM Oba Afeez Oriyomi Shittu, Olu of Ibasa/Ijegun Egba Land, High Chief Mutiu A. Aina Okoo, Odofin of Igbanko Land , High Chief Tajideen Agunbiade(JP), Onisemo of Igbanko Land, High Chief Mutiu A. Ajose, Odemo of Igbanko Land, High Chief Abudu A. Falana,, Onimole of Ikaare Kingdom amongst others.

Welcoming all attendees, the Chairman of the Council of Oba, HRM Oba Mobalende Oyekan stated the conference was born out of the urgent need to address key issues capable of escalating conflicts, such as ethno-religious conflicts, electoral violence, nepotism, or marginalization which may characterised the coming general elections and the need for Amuwo Odofin to have a common front and position.

He added that failure to address the issues timely could lead to diverting resources originally meant for human development, to military and security interventions.

“We are convinced that if all Amuwo Odofin residents are adequately sensitized to appreciate the critical importance of peace and security as been implemented by the Sanwo-Olu led government to the fulfillment of their yearnings and aspirations, threats to peace and security will be drastically reduced.

“We also feel strongly that if the cultural dimension is adopted in addressing our peace and security challenges, and electoral processes remarkable achievements would be recorded.

“In this regard, a constitutional role of traditional rulers is imperative. A bottom up grassroots mobilization approach steered by our highly esteemed monarchs will greatly complement the efforts of the government ”, Oba Oyekan stated.

Some of the traditional rulers held that some of the major challenges confronting Amuwo Odofin and the nation emanated mostly as a result of ethnic, religious and political differences.

According to Oba Gausu, several measures adopted by the Lagos State government have helped to ameliorate cases of crime and hostility, we may advocate a return to the pre-colonial tradition, where traditional rulers as custodians of the people’s norms and customs, were charged primarily with the responsibility of guaranteeing the security of lives and properties within their domains.

“The traditional institution in Nigeria appears to be the most enduring legacy of the country, having survived through the various stages of political history to the present time, we believe the current government has done well and needs our support for a second term”

In his own submission, the Onigbanko of Igbanko Land stressed that while the degree of importance of the traditional institution might have depended largely on the whims and caprices of the different political administrations in Lagos State, the institution has however never been ignored by the Lagos State Government starting from the days of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“This is because traditional institutions are usually understood and seen as instruments of social organization, which have been tested and chosen after sustained periods of social selection.” Oba Sheriff Bello said.

High Chief Mutiu stated that traditional institutions constitute the root upon which social changes take place in the society.

He said: “Traditional rulers are enthroned for the progress and development of the entire Amuwo Odofin. Therefore, nothing can hinder them from performing their roles in the society particularly advising on the direction the people may go during elections.

“Although such roles may have changed overtime due to so many factors, yet their relevance in the governance and administration of the country cannot be over-emphasized.”

Captain Adebayo Olaobaoluwaju Dosunmu, an APC Chieftain and Community Leader who was also in attendance stated that he found it ironical that traditional rulers have always been called upon to participate in issues relating to the security of the nation, yet, there were no constitutional provisions that clearly spelt out their legal jurisdiction.

The former Supervisor, stressed that such exclusion has drastically limited efforts of traditional rulers in effectively addressing security and socio-economic and political challenges within their respective domains. And as a Marine Captain with experiences on waterways management, Dosunmu said the water resources potentials in Riverine communities are yet to be tapped fully and the communities stand to benefit if the APC government is returned to power.

He further thanked the Chairman in Council for taken a stand on the 2023 elections by showing the path way.

Before adopting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their preferred choice , Oba Mobadenle eulogized Tinubu as having the requisite skills , capacity and experience to lead Nigeria on – to new heights and bounds.

The Council of Oba’s and Chiefs unanimously aligned themselves with the All Progressive Congress Candidates in Amuwo Odofin LGA, persuading all residents to vote enmasse for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of Nigeria, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule as Senator, Lagos West, Prince Lanre A. Sanusi (PLS) as House of Representative Member, Hon Olawestern for LAHA 1 and Hon Rauf as LAHA 2.
