UMUAHIA : TINUBU MINISTER WINS AS LABOUR PARTY OGAH LOSE REPS SIT
The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, on Wednesday, nullified the election of Amobi Ogah of the Labour Party representing Isiukwuato Umunneochi Federal Constituency on grounds of non-compliance to the Electoral Act.
Delivering Judgement in the Petition tagged EPT/AB/HR/8/2023 on Wednesday in Umuahia, the three-member Panel 1 of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal said the candidate of the Labour Party did not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
“How a candidate is sponsored by a political party is both pre- and post-election, there is no evidence of giving 21 days’ notice to INEC by the respondent before conducting their primary election.
“No date of primaries was placed before us; no evidence of primaries and the 3rd respondent has always said it’s an internal affair of the party.
“We have tabulated and found out that the results computed by the petition are correct and the results computed by the 1st respondent are dis-countenanced,” the tribunal ruled.
Ogah had argued that the acceptance of the ministerial appointment of Hon Nkeiruka Onyejeocha as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was a sign that she had abandoned her petition. But the tribunal in her ruling dismissed the submission of the lawmaker.
We are of the view that Section 66 is not applicable to this scenario because the petitioner is not a lawmaker of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The scenario prohibited by law is a person being a member of two arms of government,” the court ruled.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had on February 28 declared the Labour Party candidate, Ogah, as the winner of the Isiukwuato Umunneochi Federal Constituency election with a total of 11,769 votes against the current Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who the commission said scored a total of 8,752 votes.
Not happy with the result, Onyejeocha filed a petition before the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, seeking the nullification of Ogah’s election in seven reliefs contained in her petition.
AMUWO ODOFIN : GEORGE OLAWANDE’S ELECTION UPHELD AS SANUSI AIMS TO APPEAL TRIBUNAL JUDGEMENT
The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos has dismissed the election petition filed against the member representing Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency, George Olawande of the Labour Party.
Prince Lanre A. Sanusi (PLS) who is the All Progressives Congress (APC), House of Representative Candidate had challenged the declaration of his Labour Party opponent as winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting George and his party did not comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, hence, do not stand qualified to contest in the election.
Delivering the judgement, the three-man panel did not agree with the petitioner that the candidate of the Labour Party was not qualified to contest the elections.
Members of the panel were Justice A. B. Abdullahi, Justice Okon A. Okon and Justice Esther Nnenna Alukwu.
However, Sanusi in a statement on Wednesday urged his supporters to maintain calm as he vowed to consult his lawyers and exercise his rights to appeal the judgment within the stipulated days.
“While I am waiting for my team of lawyers to give me full details on the judgment, I urge all my supporters to be calm and peaceful, as their mandate is not lost. I verily know that I have the option of appeal at the Court of Appeal, which I shall exercise after due consultation with my lawyers. I urge my supporters not to be disturbed but to believe that we will get it right.”
In similar vein last month, the Lagos State National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ikeja, sacked Hon Sowunmi, member representing Ojo Federal Constituency replacing him with Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi.
In the case against Olawande, recall that the Labour Party Star Witness , Hon George Olawande was physically present at the Tribunal as a star witness in the ongoing suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and two other political party challenging the process which led to emergence of Olawande as LP candidate
The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Mr Abayomi Arabambi has faulted the candidature of the Amuwo-Odofin House of Representatives member-elect, Mr Olawande George, describing the process that churned him out as shambolic.
Arabambi who subpoenaed to unravel some shaddy discovery at th Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ikeja Lagos that was never among the candidates sponsored by the Labour Party for the February 25th election.
KOGI : PDP NATASHA DECLARED WINNER AS TRIBUNAL KICKS OUT APC OHERE
The Kogi State Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday nullified the victory of Sen. Abubakar Ohere as the winner of the Kogi Central Senatorial election.
The court further declared Natasha Akpoti- Uduagan as the actual winner of the February Senatorial election in Kogi Central.
The Tribunal Chairman, Justice K. A. Orjiako who read the unanimous judgment of the 3-man panel, said Ohere results were inflated in 9 polling units of Ajaokuta LGA while that of Natasha was intentional reduced in 9 of the same polling units by the INEC, as well as 3 other polling units result that was deliberately not entered for Natasha in the same LGA.
The court, after making the proper correction, declare Natasha Akpoti- Uduagan (PDP) as winner of the poll having polled 54,074 against Ohere (APC) who polled 51,291.
The governor of the state, Yahaya Bello is from the district.

Military officers in oil-producing Gabon said they had seized power on Wednesday, after the Central African state’s election body announced that President Ali Bongo had won a third term.
A dozen senior officers appeared on television channel Gabon 24 to declare that the election results were cancelled, borders were closed and state institutions were dissolved. They said they represented all Gabon’s security and defence forces.
Hundreds of people took to the streets of the capital Libreville to celebrate in the morning following the overnight announcement, which appeared to have been filmed from the presidential palace, according to the television images.
If successful, the coup would be the eighth in West and Central Africa since 2020. The latest one, in Niger, was in July. Military officers have also seized power in Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Chad, erasing democratic gains since the 1990s.

The coup creates more uncertainty for France’s presence in the region. It has about 350 troops stationed in Gabon. French forces were kicked out of Mali and Burkina Faso after coups in those countries, amid a wave of anti-French sentiment, and the coup leaders in Niger have also ordered them to leave.
China’s foreign ministry called for the situation in Gabon to be resolved peacefully and said the personal safety of Bongo, who visited China in April, should be ensured.
If it was a deliberate move to embarrass Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, it was spectacularly effective and devastating.
The Governor was left red-faced as he felt the first challenge to his authority since he took office in 2019.
The Lagos State House of Assembly in a surprise move had rejected 17 nominees that Governor Sanwo-Olu submitted to the Assembly. Of the 39 nominees screened, only 22 scaled the hurdle while the others, mainly returning former commissioners were rejected.
This had never happened in the history of Lagos especially since the All Progressives Congress (APC) controls both the executive and the legislature.
To most people, the action of the House showed that there was a political war between the governor and the Assembly. But what could have led to this? Before the face-off, there had been no love lost between the Governor and the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Mudasiru Obasa.
Following the decision of President Bola Tinubu to hand over the political control of the state of excellence to Sanwo-Olu, the Governor saw it as an opportunity to exert his authority on the polity, and especially the House of Assembly and its Speaker who saw himself as the alternate governor. So obvious was the aloofness of Obasa that he never attended any function with the Governor.
He would rather delegate other Assembly members to represent him on such occasions. Sanwo-Olu saw his new position as political leader as an opportunity to cut the Speaker to size. In the build-up to the selection and election of the House of Assembly leadership, the governor propped up Hon Abiodun Tobun to challenge Obasa for the Speakership of the House. The political move created so much tension in Lagos that President Tinubu was forced to invite both gladiators to State House,Abuja during which he brokered peace among them. The President was said to have persuaded the Governor not to humiliate the Speaker but let Obasa retain his position as Speaker even as he specifically drummed it to the hearing of all those present at the peace meeting that the Governor remains the political leader of the state and party in Lagos.
While the President’s decision is seen as a mediation, Obasa sees it as a move to consolidate his hold on the Assembly.
Immediately after he was re-elected Speaker, he ensured his loyalists in the House were put in leadership positions just as he alienated the opposition. He also went ahead to start challenging the Governor’s leadership. The House accused the government of being soft on every issue, and more especially on security. They ordered him to address the House more than once.
A move that had never happened in the history of the state.
It was in the middle of this tension that the Governor, to comply with the constitutional requirement of 60 days to submit his cabinet list forwarded a 39-man commissioner nominees list to the State Assembly. Most of those whose names were submitted included returning commissioners- ers who were mainly technocrats brought in during Sanwo-Olu’s first term. This was where the face-off between the Legislature and the Executive became glaring.
Many of these technocrats, even though they held political positions for four years, never joined the party or related with the politicians and members of the House.
What’s more scandalous, they never registered as party members nor were they registered to vote at the election. Also, when queried, they do not know which ward they come from. They were alsoaccused of having collected over N50 million each to mobilize voters, but never did.
This, the legislators lamented applied to the most highly profiled members of the last cabinet who see themselves as untouchables.
Another contributory factor is that almost all those rejected “have no political base and no grassroots affiliation.” Most of them are friends of the governor.
For instance, former Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who was rejected, has no political base, he is not a politician.
The Assembly swept them aside because of this. For instance, if performance was the yardstick for the confirmation, there is no way Abayomi will be disqualified, there is no way Gbenga Omotoso will be rejected, there is no way Folasade Adefisayo will be rejected, there is no way Sam Egube will be turned down, yet they were all rejected because of their political naiveness.
Another factor that worked against some of the nominees not cleared is that they were never registered in Lagos and they moved up to another state to vote, yet they aspire to political positions in the Centre of Excellence.
The Assembly saw this as cheating on behalf of those who were around and took part in the election. Some of the Commissioner nominees did not perform well during the screening at the House of Assembly.For instance,the former Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure,Aramide Adeyoye,was said to have performed poorly during the screening.
The House embarrassed her while the screening lasted.
Aside from this, Adeyoye is said to be the architect of her misfortune. As the special adviser on Works and Infrastructure during the first term of Sanwo-Olu,she was supposed to report to the Deputy Governor,Dr. Kadri Hamzat. She was said to have bypassed him and reported directly to the governor. She only reported to the Deputy Governor after certain decisions had been taken.
This did not go down well with Hamzat, who is not happy about the development.
This made her case special and there was no way she could have scaled the screening as many forces were against her. Religious factor is another reason many nominees were dropped.
About 15 of those dropped by the Assembly are Christians.
Some Muslim groups had raised dust that of the 39 Sanwo-Olu nominees, only nine of them were Muslims.This might not be unconnected with why about 15 Christians were rejected by the Assembly.
Rebellion is in the air in Lagos, and it is threatening to derail the well-ordered system put in place by Tinubu.
That the people and politicians think differently is now widely accepted. Why they do so is another matter. One possible explanation is that in the time politicians spend plotting, the people are docile expecting miracles from nowhere. As the tension builds up, Lagos remains an exception to the rule in the political firmament of the country.
There is only one Nigerian for whom Lagosians, great and small will turn up en masse and on time, he is President Tinubu.
This is because he controls the levers of politics in the only self-reliant state government in the country – Lagos. In the political firmament of the state, he is the lone Iroko tree that makes a forest.
Today, Tinubu has moved up and on in the political ladders of the nation. Realizing this, he handed over the control of the political levers to Sanwo-Olu.
He invested the Governor with the title of leader and head of the powerful Governance Advisory Council. A committee of old but powerful political leaders in the state. If this did not go well with these leaders, no one can say, but if the unfolding face-off between the Governor and Speaker of the State Assembly is anything to go by, this is the beginning of a possible protracted battle the end of which nobody can determine.
Before now, issues such as these would have been handled by Tinubu, but with him becoming the president, and now focused on the nation’s governance, Sanwo-Oluu is now on his own.
How he handles it would determine a lot in the coming
A statement by Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale revealed that President Tinubu Advised Ambassador Molly to ensure that U.S. policy is intentionally collaborative with independent African democracies at a time when they are under assault by anti-democratic forces within and outside of the continent.
The President noted that American-backed development finance and multilateral institutions, which were designed to support war-torn Europe after World War II, require swift and comprehensive reform to meet the developmental requirements of younger democracies in Africa, which operate in authoritarian-crowded environments, such that the legitimate yearnings of Africans would no longer be manipulated to serve the narrow aims of self-seeking demagogues through unconstitutional takeovers of power.
“Yes, the private sector will lead the way within an enabling environment we create for them, but the U.S. Government must be innovative in its thinking and systematically create incentives for U.S. industrial investment in Nigeria. Under my leadership, Nigeria stands ready to address their specific regulatory, tax and environmental concerns. I am determined to create prosperity for all Nigerian families,” the President declared.
The Nigerian leader affirmed that the crisis in Niger Republic would not deter him from concluding his economic reform programme successfully for the benefit of Nigerians and that he takes a queue from no nation, but will only advance the interest of the Nigerian state in his approach toward ECOWAS’ handling of the regional standoff.
“We know there is more we can do to incentivize large-scale American investment in Nigeria and we are committed to working closely with you to achieve that, as part of efforts to strengthen the Nigerian economy and the regional economy. We appreciate your willingness to create an enabling environment for that. President Joe Biden is asking to meet with you on the sidelines of UNGA and you are the only African leader he has requested to meet. It is a mark of his high regard for your leadership,” the U.S. Special Envoy said.
The President that the work of perfecting democracy is never done, even in developed democracies, as seen recently in America, as well as other emerging democracies in the world.
Taking into consideration the antecedents of Hon. Bunmi Tunji Ojo, how he broke the jinx of securing a second-term ticket for the House of Representatives from his federal constituency, the father-to-son relationship between him and Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the current Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, and the wide acceptability among the various youth groups in the state, coupled with his unquestionable political acumen, if the popular BTO decides to test his luck in the next 10 months under the APC for Ondo 2024, he may find success with God’s backing. After all, politics is about striking the iron when it’s hottest.
The recent political buzz in Ondo state is focused on the upcoming governorship election. As expected, a lot of dramas are unfolding, mirroring the situation in sister Edo State, where political manoeuvring has begun among the former associates of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the former national chairman of the APC. Mr Godwin Obaseki, the erstwhile political protégé of this NLC wizard who rode to power through his influence, turned against his benefactor alongside Comrade Philip Shuaibu, Oshiomhole’s former political godson and the current Edo State deputy governor. Together, they ensured their political godfather lost relevance for a season. As fate would have it, a battle of supremacy has erupted between Mr Obaseki and Shuaibu over the succession plan, while Oshiomhole has become the political belle of the ball.
The situation is not so different in the Sunshine State; numerous political heavyweights have expressed interest in succeeding Aketi. One such contender is the veteran gubernatorial aspirant and candidate, Chief Olusola Oke SAN, who remains in the fray. A former representative of Ondo State on the NDDC board and ex-OSOPADEC boss, he is prepared to give his best in pursuing the governorship aspiration that spans over a decade. For the sake of memory, he was the PDP candidate against Dr. Mimiko of the LP and Aketi of the ACN in 2012. He delivered an impressive performance during the widely observed campaign debate, showcasing exceptional oratory skills that won over many hearts. Despite this, he lost to the Labour Party of Iroko, which enjoyed covert federal government support. The 2016 election was a shock to most APC supporters when he joined their ranks after Dr Jonathan’s loss to President Buhari in 2015. He managed to come third in the highly competitive Ondo State gubernatorial primaries, ahead of Sen. Ajayi Boroffice and Sen. Tayo Alasoadura, who secured the fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Riding on his popularity, with assumed support from disgruntled APC leaders both within and outside the state, Chief Oke defected to the Alliance for Democracy to go head-to-head with Aketi. The latter was believed to have secured his position with the help of anti-Tinubu forces from the Southwest, led by Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State. In the 2020 Aketi’s second-term bid, Despite most APC members preferring this Ilaje-born political figure through the Unity Forum, events favoured Aketi’s trajectory, securing his victory. Chief Oke is rekindling his efforts to make another substantial attempt, marking his fourth endeavour in this aspiration, reminiscent of President Muhammad Buhari’s journey. Additionally, Princes Oladuni Odu, one of the most accomplished female politicians from the Sunshine State, a Princess of Idepe in Okitipupa local government, a former commissioner during the military era, the longest-serving SUBEB chairman (though intermittently), and the current secretary to the Ondo State government, has signalled her interest in replacing Aketi.
Likewise, the richest man in Ondo State, a business mogul turned senator, and a scholarly billionaire, as our popular Mr. Lanre Tuigbiyile would describe him, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, is gaining momentum and widespread acceptability, as evidenced by the eagerness of the people to engage with him on major social media platforms. Given his recent adoption of a simpler lifestyle, he might succeed in capturing a significant percentage of political elites across various age groups. From my observations, many people who once criticized him for his pompous attitude, including those from his local government, are now rallying behind Araba. Some of them have even reached out to me—I mean the Ikales. Additionally, the current deputy governor, who is temporarily standing in for his boss in an acting capacity, H.E. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, might express interest depending on the outcome of his ongoing confrontation with the influential Owo cabal.
The longest-serving Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, has signalled his interest. However, Mr. Yinka Salard, his elder brother, has been tarnishing the reputation of this Ile-Oluji-born financial wizard with his undemocratic tendency to attack any perceived potential opponent of his younger brother on social media. In one of the WhatsApp groups dedicated to professionals in politics, Mr. Yinka Salard attempted to ridicule Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, prompting Nigeria’s most educated billionaire to intervene. This situation has raised serious concerns among many citizens, who are left wondering about the behaviour Mr Yinka Salard might exhibit if his younger brother eventually wins and becomes the state’s topmost political office holder. This has certainly become a notable mark against Mr. Akinterinwa.
Although there’s a prevalent belief that our next governor should come from the southern senatorial district, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the laws governing the Sunshine State do not consider it an absolute or binding requirement. This implies that aspirants from either Ondo Central, which produced Aketi’s immediate predecessor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, or Ondo North, where the current governor, Arakunrin, hails from, can contest the election. The emergence of Hon. Bunmi Tunji Ojo as a federal minister in Emilokan’s cabinet speaks volumes in this regard. Even though he hails from one of the four local governments that comprise the Akokos of the late Chief Adebayo Adefarati, who was the governor of Ondo State between 1999 and 2003, all efforts by illustrious sons like Dr. Segun Abraham, Dr. Olu Aguloye, Hon. Saka Lawal, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, and others from this ethnic group to attain the state’s top political position have proven futile since that time.
Considering Hon. Bunmi Tunji Ojo’s track record, how he shattered the barrier of securing a second-term ticket for the House of Representatives in his federal constituency, his father-to-son connection with Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the current Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, and his acceptance among various youth groups in the state, along with his unquestionable political savvy, if he chooses to take his chances in the coming 10 months under the APC for Ondo 2024, he may find success with divine support. After all, in politics, success often comes from striking when the iron is hottest.

OJO FED. CONSTITUENCY: APC WINS AS TRIBUNAL KICKS OUT LABOUR PARTY
The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos has again nullified the election of the member representing Ojo Federal Constituency, Seyi Sowunmi of the Labour Party.
The commission said it would not tolerate any attempt by political parties to ignore constitutionally-allowed processes in the nomination of its candidates as they prepare for the primary elections.
On Thursday, the court declared former Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Honourable Lanre Ogunyemi as the winner of the constituency.
The three man panel, Panel 3 sitting at the old National Assembly complex, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos declared Ogunyemi, former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and his party, APC winner of the election conducted on Saturday, 25 February, 2023.
Members of the panel are: Justice Ashu A. Ewah, Chairman; Justice Abdullahi A Ozegya; and Justice M A Sambo.
Ogunyemi had challenged Oluwaseyi Ayopo Sowunim of the Labour Party who was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ogunyemi, a holder of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education (with English Language as specialisation ) and a Master’s Degree in International Relations and Strategic Studies both from Lagos State University, he has attended many conferences, seminars, workshops at home and overseas on diverse subjects.
Ogunyemi is an attendee of University of Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education Programme on Transformational Leadership and Organisational Change ditto University of North America’s International Leadership, Government Economy, Negotiation, Communication and Fundraising Summit, amongst several other international studies.
A grassroots politician of good standing and pedigree, Ogunyemi is a reliable trustee to Leadership and has served as party officer at the ward and local government levels in times past. He is unassuming, courageous and dependable and has handled so many committee, local and state assignments with utmost credibility and commitment.

AMUWO ODOFIN MOURNS AS SANUSI LOSSES DAD, …DESCRIBES HIM AS A ROLE MODEL
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency was thrown into mourning on August 21st, 2023, as House of Representatives faithful, Prince Lanre A. Sanusi (PLS) loses dad, Chief Abdul-Wasiu Olanrewaju Sanusi.
This was announced in a press release by the PLS Campaign Organization in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State.
The organization described Pa Sanusi as a loyal party member whose attributes are worth emulating.
PLS on his own part described his father as a rear model who has contributed immensely to his socio-political political career. He will surely be missed.

CHIEF ABDUL-WASIU OLANREWAJU SANUSI PASSES ON AT 72 YEARS
“On behalf of the leaders, elders, members of PLS Campaign Organization, I regret to announce the passing away to glory of the father of our Symbol, Chief Abdul-Wasiu Olanrewaju Sanusi
“He died in the early hours of today, August 21st, 2023, at the age of 72 years.
“Our hearts are heavy with grief as we mourn with his wife, children, and family, more importantly, our Symbol, Prince Lanre A. Sanusi (PLS).
“This is a very painful death to the whole of the APC family in Lagos State, in particular, Ijede LCDA and Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency.
“Pa Sanusi was a committed and dedicated progressive and party loyalist whose ideals were inexorably tied to the philosophy of our great party.
“He contributed immensely to the growth of the Party in his last years.
“We call on our members to keep the family of our Symbol in prayers in this very difficult moment. As we mourn our beloved father.
“Details of the burial shall be circulated as detailed by the family.”
