ORIADE LCDA : PLS PARTNERS GROUP TO LAUNCH PROJECT ON INCREASED VOTERS PARTICIPATION

PUSH NEWS 24 INTERNATIONAL : February 16th, 2023

ORIADE LCDA : PLS PARTNERS GROUP TO LAUNCH PROJECT ON INCREASED VOTERS PARTICIPATION

“the use of data and digital systems to increase voter participation in elections will create a culture of participatory democracy.” – PLS

A Non-governmental Organisation, Asiwaju Grassroot Team (AGT) has launched an aggressive campaign to re-orientate the populace on the need to fulfill their National Obligations as the 2023 general elections draws nigh.

The Seminar themed on the topic – “National Voting Fortune” was held at Oraide LCDA in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency with the primary title -Political Envagelism : Raising Active voters above 50%” a deliberate effort aimed at increasing voters’ participation in electoral process in Nigeria.

Push News 24 International had recently reported the level of political apathy that thrives in Nigeria regarding voters’ participation and also analysed its implications on the democratic process.

Announcing the launch of the project in Oriade LCDA, a community which is home to majority of the indigenous communities in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency, the AGT Leader, noted that democracy is built on the principle of participation where all citizens are expected to play active roles.

This, according to him, defines the art of nation-building where everyone is involved.

All Progressives Congress (APC) Stalwart and House of Representative Candidate for Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency, Prince Lanre A. Sanusi (PLS) in his keynote address, said
“In a democratic country like Nigeria, one of the metrics of measuring our democratic status is highlighted by regular elections.

“Since 1999 when the country returned to democracy, after a long hiatus with military rule, the country has held six elections. Some of the low points of these elections have been massive electoral apathy influenced by factors such as electoral violence, political thuggery, rigging, etc.

“Nonetheless, elections are what determine the quality of leadership a country has. Growing political apathy harms the development of the country. This is one of the reasons why we have decided to partner AGT on the need to shore up eligible voting population to above 50% in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency,” PLS said.

The US trained Financial Advisor advised that “the use of data and digital systems will help to increase voter participation in elections and create a culture of the anticipated over 50% participatory democracy.”

“My collaborations with AGT is set out to educate Nigerians and indeed Amuwo Odofin Constituents on the need to actively participate in the electoral process. We shall also be advocating for free, fair and peaceful elections. The process of electing public officials must be transparent and citizens must exercise their franchise without fear.

“This campaign will also address issues such as voter education, electoral violence, getting voters card and making the electoral laws accessible to more citizens. As the February 2023 elections approach us, my mission with AGT is to play an active role in increasing participation in elections, especially among young people in Oriade LCDA and Amuwo Odofin LGA.”

“As a group of interest, We will be working with various stakeholders including INEC, community-based organizations, religious institutions, youth led and women groups as well as the media to make this re-orientation a success. We will also fashion out ways to erase barriers to greater political participation. It is important we increase people’s participation in the electoral process and make it more meaningful.”

Sanusi stressed that ballots that are rejected during the vote count are widely attributed to inadequate civic and voter education.

” To put this in context, over one million votes cast in the Nigerian presidential election in 2011 were rejected during counting; mainly because the ballots were wrongly marked. The rejected votes constitute about 3.2% of all votes cast in that election. According to observers, this figure is high and could have been markedly lower with adequate voter education.”

“At the same time, there have been rapid declines in the turnout of voters in elections across Nigeria. For instance, the voter turnout in the 2019 presidential election dropped to 35% from 44% in the 2015 elections. That 44% turnout was also a decline from 54% attained in the 2011 polls. Indeed, statistics show that the voter turnout for Nigerian presidential elections has been dropping since 2003.”

“We urge Nigerians of voting age who are yet to register to take advantage of this opportunity to get registered and prepare to exercise their franchise when the need arises even after the 2023 general elections.”

PLS further commended Amuwo Odofin Constituents for their support for him so far and urging them to vote overwhelmingly for all the APC in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency.

2023 : AMUWO ODOFIN COUNCIL OF OBAS ENGAGE RIVERINE YOUTH LEADERS ON POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

PUSH NEWS 24 INTERNATIONAL : January 29th, 2023

Cross Section of Youth Leaders

2023 : AMUWO ODOFIN COUNCIL OF OBAS ENGAGE RIVERINE YOUTH LEADERS ON POLITICAL PARTICIPATION

Nigerian youths can significantly impact the outcome of the 2023 elections if they are intentional about what the future means to them. There are instances in other climes when youth influenced electoral outcomes. Perhaps the most well-known is former US President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and election, which was driven by young people. In another example, the term “youthquake” was used in the United Kingdom after young voters saw British Labour Party deny the Conservative Party an expected majority win in 2017.

Will the 2023 general election be a defining moment for Amuwo Odofin youths and the future of Nigeria? Obviously, this is the slippery question that set the tone at a recent gathering of Youth leaders from.the riverine communities in Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency.

The event which held at Inagbe Resort and Conference Center on Friday 27th, January 2023 was a gathering of all the youth leaders and their Secretaries from Ward H, I, and J at the instance of the Amuwo Odofin Council of Obas and Chiefs ably led by its Chairman, HRM Oba Mobalende Oyekan.

The Traditional Rulers however, were concerned about a rhetorical question : Will Amuwo Odofin youths constructively deploy their demographic power to influence the outcome of the election and redefine the future of Nigeria, or would they sacrifice it on the altar of the immediate convenience of the primordial sensibilities of ethno-religious sentiment, political party affiliation, and economic considerations?.

One after the other the youths spoke their minds stressing their concerns and also thankful of the recognition given to them by the royal fathers.

Several progressive recommendations on youths political participation in Amuwo Odofin were highlighted for referencing.

One of the traditional rulers said they choose to engage them (youths) because ” …The youths are the most powerful voting bloc by numbers, and ironically they seem unaware of the power they have to decide the fate of power strugglers, and to reshape the socio-political landscape of Amuwo Odofin the way they want it to be. Achieving this requires the youths coagulating into one potent and unique power bloc in the Amuwo firmament.

Former Minister of State for Defense, who is also an Apex leader in Badagry Division, Sen Musiliu Obanikoro while encouraging the youths to return the ruling party at the February 25th polls stressed that “…the youth participate less in the most critical aspect of the electoral process itself – voting. Herein lies the conundrum. How can youths influence the country’s leadership when there is enormous voting apathy among them, and the few who vote are not coordinated to vote en bloc to influence the outcome of elections? What a waste of political power“.

The former Ambassador to Ghana charged the youth leaders to mobilise others and vote enmasse for the ruling All Progressive Congress Candidates.

APC Stalwarts and key Campaigner for Asiwaju/Shettima 2023, Captain Adebayo Olaobaoluwaju Dosunmu highlighted the key qualities of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and why he should be voted in by the youths.

Dosunmu who is also a youth advocate, stated “Harnessing the enthusiasm among youths is easier now than ever. The reason is that they are getting the brunt of the challenges. They are beginning to link their myriad of problems to leadership.”

He said, “We will keep sensitising the youths and telling them to eschew any form of violence and promote peace wherever they find themselves. The 2023 general elections is a very decisive period for Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency and Nigeria and we urge Amuwo youths to get their PVC and vote Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for President, Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Governor, Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule as Senator Lagos West, Prince Lanre Sanusi as House of Representative while the duo of Hon Rauf and Hon Olawestern for Amuwo Odofin Assembly 1&2.”

The Council of Oba’s and Chiefs unanimously aligned themselves with all APC candidates, charging the youths in Riverine to ensure victory for the APC.

Sanus (PLS) charged members of the Community Development Association / CDC’S of Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency to serve as voluntary supervisors of their Representatives and get involved in the governance and electioneering process in Lagos State.

The APC candidate emphasised on the importance of teamwork, stating that all hands must be on deck to see that they are involved in choosing who their representative are and the quality of projects been delivered.

According to the Awori born Prince : “Our community development; the CDAs and the CDCs are the real engines of growth. They are the owners of all our interventions in government. They are the ones that own every intervention. Everything we are building is for the community, it’s for the Local government.

“So, it is important that the Local Government takes ownership of these development initiatives. We need to ensure that once wmits an election year we participate actively in choosing our representatives , we should monitor them and ensure that they do and deliver quality service as promised.”

“You have to serve as monitors and ensure that the right proportion of things needed are used. You have the right to present your complaints to any contractor once you discover that the work is not properly done.”

PLS, as he is fondly called, charged the CDC to take ownership of what is going on in the Constituency.

While paying homage to his predecessors, he said so much is yet to be done, and he is willing and prepared for the task ahead.

I appeal for support from the community leaders to vote in all APC candidates so we can continue to enjoy the accelerated development in Lagos State.

AMUWO : SANUSI DONATES TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, PROMISE TO STRENGTHEN DISABILITY RIGHTS BILL

PUSH NEWS 24 INTERNATIONAL: January 18th, 2023

AMUWO : SANUSI DONATES TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, PROMISE TO STRENGTHEN DISABILITY RIGHTS BILL

The All Progressives Congress (APC), House of Representatives Candidate, Prince Lanre A. Sanusi has promised to strengthen and liase with the necessary stakeholders to ensure every part of the Disability Act is enforced.

Sanusi made this remarks when he interacted with members of the Amuwo Odofin Branch of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria with a strength of over 800 registered members.

Worried about the need to address the challenges of persons with disability Sanusi said ” In Nigeria, as in many countries, the journey to achieving disability-inclusive development has not been without challenges. After ratifying the UNCRPD in 2007 and the optional protocols in 2011, it took 12 years of relentless advocacy work for Nigeria to finally get a disability act in place, I will ensure its provisions are effective to the latter”.

There is therefore need to take into account and to address their concerns in all policy-making and programming. Special measures are needed at all levels to integrate them into the mainstream of development“.

My legislative pursuit therefore is conceived to provide the much-needed voice and lead a movement that champions a more organized and strategic response to disability issues with a development mindset in Nigeria”.

The high point of the event was when members of the Association unanimously identified with the PLS mandate to the Green Chamber, adorning themselves with PLS Souvenirs as a mark of solidarity.

The Awori born philanthropist thanked the group for their support and also used the event to support members of the Association in cash and kind.

Push News 24 reports that on January 23, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, following 9 years of relentless advocacy by disability rights groups and activists.

According to the World Health Organization’s 2011 World Disability Report, about 15 percent of Nigeria’s population, or at least 25 million people, have a disability. Many of them face a number of human rights abuses including stigma, discrimination, violence, and lack of access to healthcare, housing, and education.

Nigeria ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2007 and its Optional Protocol in 2010. Since then, civil society groups and people with disabilities have called on the government and relevant stakeholders to put it into practice.
